Schloss Elmau, built between 1914 and 1916 by the theologian Johannes Müller as a retreat for intellectual and spiritual renewal, lived the full arc of the twentieth century. Müller himself came to regard Hitler as God-sent and was convicted after the war as a principal offender in Germany's denazification proceedings; the same house then sheltered concentration camp survivors and, in 1957, hosted the German-British Chamber Music Week, where Jewish and German artists performed together for the first time since the Holocaust. Rebuilt after a 2005 fire, Elmau is run today by Müller's grandson, who has chosen to confront that history rather than bury it, programming debates on how German intellectual culture enabled the Holocaust. It has hosted the G7 twice and stages some 150 concerts a year, all in a remote alpine valley at the foot of the Wetterstein. It is a place made for the serious gathering of minds. That is why it is home to Zero.
